Smart Watch May Be Able To Detect Corona (COVID-19)

The Apple Watch may be able to detect if a wearer has coronavirus days before they are diagnosed or symptoms appear, a new body of research shows.

Studies have shown that smartwatches such as the Apple Watch and FitBit may be able to detect positives a few days before the onset of symptoms of the new coronavirus infection.

According to researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Apple Watch can predict a new corona infection a few days before being tested for symptoms. The index is "Heart Rate Variability" (HRV / periodic fluctuation of heart rate interval), which is said to be a good measure of how the immune system works.

Because, "I know that heart rate variability changes as inflammation occurs in the body." The new corona causes incredible inflammation, which is a good indicator that you can predict that you are infected without your knowledge.

People infected with the new corona have been shown to have lower heart rate variability than those with negative heart rate variability, that is, less hourly heart rate variability. High heart rate variability does not mean that your heart rate is rising, but that your nervous system is active, adaptable, and resilient to stress, and conversely, when it is low, they are lost. It seems that it is being damaged.

The study is based on the results of a follow-up of nearly 300 healthcare workers at the university wearing Apple Watch from April 29th to September 29th. Apple hasn't participated in or funded the study, but was mentioned by CEO Tim Cook at the "Time Flies" (new Apple Watch announcement) event last September.

Another study from Stanford University has shown the results of using fitness trackers from multiple manufacturers such as Apple Watch, FitBit, and Garmin. According to the report, 81% of the participants who were positive for the new corona had experienced a change in resting heart rate 9 and a half days before the onset.

Professor Michael Snyder, who conducted the study, points out that detection by smartwatches may help to make up for some of the shortcomings of the new corona test. That is, "The problem is that people can't always test, but these devices can measure 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Smartwatches return data instantly in real time, and if you're lucky, the test results will be available in a few days. It will come back. "

The Stanford University team has also developed a system that warns you if your heart rate is rising for a long time. These studies may lead to the infection being unknowingly refraining from going out or meeting other people, and thus converging the infection, as the majority of infections are prevalent in asymptomatic people.

Coronavirus computer game teaches children social distancing.

LONDON: A university professor has launched a computer game called "Can You Save the World?" to help children understand how social distancing can save lives during the coronavirus pandemic.

Richard Wiseman said he came up with the idea for what is thought to be the world's first Covid-19 computer game after going for a walk during lockdown in Britain and finding it "felt like a computer game" as he dodged pedestrians and cyclists.

Wiseman, a professor of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire, said research showed that games which encourage positive social behaviour can influence people's actions in the real world.

"It's a fun way of getting quite a scary message across," said Wiseman, who created the game, which has already gone viral, with designer Martin Jacob.

"There's quite a lot of research showing that if you get people - kids in particular - to behave in certain ways in video games it really does transfer to real life."

The creators, who are now looking at developing an app, say governments, schools and health authorities could use the game to encourage social distancing - a key measure to keep the virus in check as countries emerge from lockdown.

"It seems to me probably more effective than some of the scary announcements we're getting because it gets in under the radar, particularly with kids," said Wiseman.

Players control an avatar through an increasingly busy street and "save lives" by avoiding pedestrians, cyclists and people sneezing - all of whom are surrounded by exclusion zones.

They can also collect masks and drop them off for health workers to save extra lives.

The aim is to save as many lives as possible. As the game progresses, the score starts accelerating to demonstrate that by protecting yourself you are protecting many others.

Toilet rolls

Wiseman, who is also a member of Britain's Inner Magic Circle of top magicians, said about 15,000 people had played the game since its launch on Friday.

Although conceived for children, adults are also playing and posting pictures on Twitter.

"It has gone viral. It feels like it has chimed with people," said Wiseman. "It's a way of talking about these things with kids without it being all doom and gloom."

The game has humourous touches with players also able to scoop up groceries including toilet rolls, which were in short supply at the start of lockdown as shoppers stripped supermarket shelves.

"If you're lucky enough to come across a toilet roll then you whiz through the game for a while at super speed," Wiseman said. "Toilet rolls are very rare – just like real life."

If a player bumps into someone, they lose points. Too many collisions get them "confined" and the game ends.

The highest possible score is 7 billion lives saved - about the size of the world population.

The top score so far is 2 billion, but Wiseman confesses he is a long way off.

"For me it's about 1,000 - I'm ridiculously bad at my own game." - May 14, 2020, Thomson Reuters Foundation

Huawei Faces Two Big Threats

Huawei, with plenty of resources of its own (and most likely with support from the Chinese government, determined to fight back against the US) could soon be investing heavily in the marketing and improvement of an Android fork.

By imposing restrictions on Huawei Technologies Co, the administration of US President Donald Trump may force the Chinese company to do something that no one in tech has dared to do for a long time: Challenge Google’s control of the Android universe, which earned the US company a huge European fine last year.

Huawei faces two big threats from US technology export restrictions. One is the loss of American components for its products, a blow it cannot parry immediately if it wants to keep making top-flight smartphones. The other is the potential withdrawal of its Android licence, which would stop Huawei from pre-installing the latest Google approved version of the operating system and some key services Western users see as necessary – above all Google’s Play Store, the biggest repository of Android apps.

This particular obstacle could, under the right conditions, turn into a Huawei strength in Europe, a market that accounts for almost a third of the company’s smartphone unit sales, according to market analytics company IDC.

Google creates virtual reality voyage to Italy

Really awesome, Google started in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, now Google has recreated a mythical journey from 300 years ago, that takes armchair travellers through the jewels of Italia in a virtual reality version of “The Grand Tour of Italy.”

Art lovers and Italophiles can explore Italy without leaving home using Google’s VR Cardboard, a platform that creates immersive experiences through a simple, foldable and affordable, cardboard viewer.

The Grand Tour of Italy was a voyage undertaken by wealthy young, adventure-seeking men and women who were dispatched by their upper class families to explore the country’s art and culture and become sophisticated and learned citizens of the world.

Three hundred years later, the voyage is being democratised for the less affluent, through a VR experience that explores four cities — Venice, Palermo, Siena and Rome – in 25 videos, 21 Street View tours, 38 digital exhibitions and 1,300 ultra-high resolution images.

Partners include museums, art galleries, and theatres across the country.

Highlights include a street art tour in Rome, and the Redentore fireworks display in Venice.

Parts of the tour are also available on Google Arts and Culture.

7 Technologies Where China Has the U.S. Beat

Earlier this week, the latest surprise came from energy secretary Steven Chu, who's been talking up China's green progress in an effort to boost Washington's resolve on clean tech policy.

In a talk at the National Press Club, with characteristic forceful clarity (PDF of slides), Chu illuminated the growing list of sectors where China's emerging leadership threatens U.S. players, and added leadership in supercomputing as the most recent Sino-superlative. China's success in these technologies represents a "Sputnik Moment" for the United States, Chu said.

"When it comes to innovation, Americans don't take a back seat to anyone -- and we certainly won't start now," said Secretary Chu at the event. "From wind power to nuclear reactors to high-speed rail, China and other countries are moving aggressively to capture the lead. Given that challenge, and given the enormous economic opportunities in clean energy, it's time for America to do what we do best: innovate."

China's ascent to the top of the list for supercomputing speed reveals a new front in this race. Last month China's Tianhe-1A, developed by Chinese defense researchers, became the world's fastest supercomputer, with a performance level of 2.57 petaflop/s (quadrillions of calculations per second, for all the geeks in our audience, based on a standard test), substantially eclipsing the U.S. DOE's Cray XT5 "Jaguar" system at Oak Ridge national labs in Tennessee, which runs at 1.75 petaflop/s. Third place is also held by a Chinese computer.

Supercomputers may seem long way from grid-competitive solar panels, long-range electric car batteries, or other cleantech gizmos, but advanced computational simulation is the keystone of most leading-edge scientific research, including nuclear energy, nanotech and materials science, proteomics and other advanced biotech applications. Basically, any very advanced science these days needs big computing horsepower. Leadership on the fastest-computer league tables has been traded off many times, between U.S., Japanese and European computing centers. China is a relative newcomer to the race, but is clearly the new elite.

Chu highlighted several crucial technologies -- mostly in the areas of power generation and  transportation -- where China is already outpacing U.S. efforts, adding the U.S. must innovate or risk falling far behind. The following is from the DOE:

High Voltage Transmission

China has deployed the world's first Ultra High Voltage AC and DC lines -- including one capable of delivering 6.4 gigawatts to Shanghai from a hydroelectric plant nearly 1300 miles away in southwestern China. These lines are more efficient and carry much more power over longer distances than those in the United States.

• High-Speed Rail.

In the span of six years, China has gone from importing this technology to exporting it, with the world's fastest train and the world's largest high-speed rail network, which will become larger than the rest of the world combined by the end of the decade. Some short distance plane routes have already been cancelled, and train travel from Beijing to Shanghai (roughly equivalent to New York to Chicago) has been cut from 11 hours to 4 hours.

• Advanced Coal Technologies.
China is rapidly deploying supercritical and ultra-supercritical coal combustion plants, which have fewer emissions and are more efficient than conventional coal plants because they burn coal at much higher temperatures and pressures. Last month, Secretary Chu toured an ultra-supercritical plant in Shanghai which claims to be 45 to 48 percent efficient. The most efficient U.S. plants are about 40 percent efficient. China is also moving quickly to design and deploy technologies for Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) plants as well as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS).

• Nuclear Power.

China has more than 30 nuclear power plants under construction, more than any other country in the world, and is actively researching fourth generation nuclear power technologies.

• Alternative Energy Vehicles.
China has developed a draft plan to invest $17 billion in central government funds in fuel economy, hybrids, plug-in hybrids, electric and fuel cell vehicles, with the goal of producing 5 million new energy vehicles and 15 million fuel-efficient conventional vehicles by 2020.

• Renewable Energy.
China is installing wind power at a faster rate than any nation in the world, and manufactures 40 percent of the world's solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. It is home to three of the world's top ten wind turbine manufacturers and five of the top ten silicon-based PV manufacturers in the world.

• Supercomputing.
Last month, the Tianhe-1A, developed by China's National University of Defense Technology, became the world's fastest supercomputer. While the United States -- and the Department of Energy in particular -- still has unrivalled expertise in the useful application of high performance computers to advance scientific research and develop technology, America must continue to improve the speed and capacity of our advanced supercomputers.

On a note of consolation, Chu identified two research areas in U.S. labs that have the potential to vault U.S. industries to the front of these fields. Both are both vehicle related:

• Revolutionary Electric Vehicle Batteries -- 500 Miles on a Single Charge.
With the help of Recovery Act funding, Arizona-based Fluidic Energy is working with Arizona State University to develop a new generation of "metal-air" batteries that can store many times more energy than standard lithium-ion batteries. Metal-air batteries contain high energy metals and literally breathe oxygen from the air, giving them the ability to store extreme amounts of energy.

To date, the development of these batteries has been blocked by the limitations of using unstable water based solutions that break down and evaporate out of the battery as it breathes. Fluidic Energy's innovative approach involves ionic liquids -- extremely stable salts in liquid form -- using no water at all.

If successful, the effort could yield batteries that weigh less, cost less, and are capable of carrying a four passenger electric car 500 miles without recharging, at a cost competitive with internal combustion engines. A fact sheet on the project, which is part of DOE's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E).

Converting Sunlight Into Usable Fuel.
Through a newly established Energy Innovation Hub led by the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), an interdisciplinary team of scientists and engineers are working to create an integrated system modeled after photosynthesis that can convert sunlight, carbon dioxide and water into usable fuels such as gasoline.

The goal is to create a system of artificial photosynthesis that is 10 times more efficient than traditional photosynthesis in converting sunlight into fuel -- paving the way for a major expansion of America's biofuel industry and reducing our dependence on oil.

The Apple iPhone has one of the most unique touch screen keyboards any other phone has or has ever had, with a well designed and advanced technology like never before. With such a unique touch screen keyboard, there are a hand-full of tricks that you must know so as to make your messaging experience a delight. These very simple tricks if followed accurately can enable you to type quicker and have error free messages, as well as making it possible to be able to type easier than ever before.

- The very first tip concerns actually typing letters into your iPhone. When entering a letter, you tap on it; however, the letter isn’t placed onto the screen until you lift your finger off of it.
Thus, if you accidentally touched the wrong key then you can simply fix this by sliding your finger to the correct letter. Then when you have found the right letter, you simply lift your finger as you would do normally and the letter right will be placed on the screen. This tip can help fix some errors, as well as safe you considerable time.

- The second tip is all about the auto-correction feature within the keyboard. Even though this feature seems to be a great way to keep your writing clear and easy. It also makes it very easy to accept wrong words that you never intended to type-in fact there is a whole website dedicated to “wrong words gaffs”. So if you want to stay away from wrong words gaffs, then you have to learn how to accept and reject suggested words. If you want to accept a suggested word that pops up as you start typing, then you will have to tap either return, space or a punctuation mark simply. However, if the suggested word is not the word you are looking for, and you want to reject a it, just simply continue typing and ignore the suggestion and once you have finished typing the word that you want, you can now tap the completed word.

-Also remember that if you actually spelled a word that is not available in the iPhone suggestion list more than twice, it automatically adds it to your words list. and also if you consecutively use a particular word, out of a given suggestion, that word is also added to your words list, more like your most used words. And the next time you start typing the same letters relative to the word, it will be at the top of the suggestion list. And even though it might take some time, say two or three weeks for your iPhone to store all these words, once it is done, your iPhone will be more faster when typing.

-For the last tip in this series, we are going to be looking at the capitalization of words. If you want make the first letter of a word a capital letter, you simply tap the shift key and then tap the letter you want capitalized. But what if you want to capitalize the entire word? This is very easy as well, and doesn’t require you to tap the shift key before each letter as we did with capitalizing a single letter. Instead go to settings and then tap general after that tap keyboard. From there tap and select “Enable Caps Lock,” from then hence forth, when you double tap the shift key it will light up blue, and you will be able to type in all caps.
Some of these tricks might appear to be very simple, and at times we may under look them and consider them to be irrelevant, but they can also at the same time completely change the way you look at and use your iPhone. So don’t hesitate to try them out if you have’t been using them already

How to Controls Your Kids' Technology Use

Smartphones, video game consoles and Internet browsers can be great devices for kids to learn and play with, but their internet-connected nature can make it difficult for parents to keep control over their use.

From accessing inappropriate content to using the device too much to racking up huge unexpected bills, unsupervised use of these devices can cause serious issues.

To address this issue, many communications carriers have created technology that gives parents control over their kids’ use of their devices and services. “Parental control technology” describes a wide variety of software and hardware solutions that parents and caregivers can use to restrict the content their children can access and the people they can communicate with.

The challenge is that, depending on the technology, medium, and service provider, parental control options vary quite a bit, so finding the most effective way to protect your children from adult content you’d rather not let them access can be tough.

To address this, this articles to help consumers navigate the landscape of parental control technology and find the options that are best for their families.

Best Practices

Parents often worry that, compared to their tech-savvy teens and pre-teens, they have little hope of keeping up with their use of technology. The truth is you don’t have to be a computer or technical expert to prevent your young ones from accessing content that you deem inappropriate. Here are some basic rules of the road to keep your kids safe online.

Talk to your children so they know what is acceptable, what sites you want them to stay away from, and who they are allowed to text, for example. This will help both you and your and children start a dialogue about safe use of technology.

Find out where they’re hanging out online. Get familiar with the Web sites your child or teen visits. Have them show you their favorite sites and discuss what they like about them.

Make sure your children understand that they should never give out identifying information about themselves, friends, or family members. This includes names, addresses, phone numbers, where you work, email addresses, passwords, social security numbers, and credit card numbers.

Create a technology “inventory.” Parents should know what technologies their children are using and what those devices are capable of. For example, does the families’ cable television service include on-demand content (potentially with access to adult programming)? Do the children’s cell phones include an Internet browsing capability? Are parental controls on the Internet browser’s software enabled?
Set up your computer in a central, open location, like the living room or kitchen, so Internet use can be supervised.

Create a family agreement for Internet use that includes items such as hours of use, what sites can be accessed, and what sites are off-limits.

Tell your children that if someone they are talking to online harasses, bullies, or makes them uncomfortable in any way, they should talk to a parent, teacher, or an adult they trust.

Every family is unique. We all have our own set of criteria for what we are comfortable with. Not all of these suggestions will apply to your family situation, and they are not intended to be a complete list of all available options. Hopefully, this can at least serve as a starting point to begin a conversation about safe practices for going online, watching TV, and connecting with others.

Parental Controls Phones and Tablets

If your child is getting their own iPhone, iPad or Android device, it's a good idea to set them up with their own Apple ID or Google account so you can keep their digital life and yours separate. Thankfully, you can do this without letting them loose to do whatever they want with their new device.

For Apple families, you'll need to use your own device to turn on Family Sharing for your own account, and then you can add the Apple ID of any family members to be part of your group. Children under 13 can't make their own Apple ID, so you'll have to do it for them.

If you'd prefer certain aspects of the device to be off-limits entirely, for example Safari or the App Store, you can do this on your child's device by accessing 'Restrictions' in the general settings. This is also how you can restrict the device's use of location services or access to adult-rated apps, music, movies and websites.

When your kids' accounts are connected to yours with Family Sharing, they will get access to any iTunes and App store purchases you make. If you'd like to give them the autonomy to buy their own things, you can activate "Ask to Buy", which sends a request directly to your phone when a child would like to use your credit card to buy something.

The process is much the same for Android families, with parental controls that limit apps, music and movies by classification on the device itself (you'll find it in the "settings" of any Google Play branded app).

Android devices don't usually come with the ability to block certain aspects of the phone entirely, or limit the kinds of websites you can access, although there are many parental control apps you can use to do this.

Anyone over 13 can sign up for a Google account, and if you add your kids to your Family Library group you can allow them to use your money for purchases by entering your PIN on their device.

Parental Controls Game Consoles

On both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, parents should sign in and create an account for themselves first, and then make one for their kids (this is called a child account on Xbox, or a sub account on PlayStation).

Though the systems work a little differently depending on which console you get, each allows the parent to decide what classification level is appropriate for each child, regulate their spending and limit their online activities.

As the holiday season approaches, Xbox's Jeremy Hinton says it's important for parents to be prepared to walk through game console rules with kids from the moment the machine is unwrapped.

"There are a lot of consoles and devices that will be sitting under Christmas trees right now to be opened on Christmas day", Hinton says. "And of course the kids will want to jump right in, but there really are a number of features that we think benefit the family considerably if they're done right at that first stage".

When you set up a child's account, the console will ask you to set appropriate rules and restrictions, so going through this process with the kids present can set ground rules from the get go.

On most platforms, content such as games, movies and apps are classified using a mix of official ratings and those determined by an independent body. Regardless of the platform, each child's account can be set to an appropriate level, from G to R.

"What we really want is for parents to have a level of confidence", Hinton says, "that you're child's not accidentally going to wander into some content that might not be appropriate for them".

On Xbox and PlayStation, parents can grant a temporary exception to these rules by inputting their passcode, for example if the child tries to watch a movie rated higher than what the parental controls allow, but the parent is present and says it's OK. For this reason, it's important to have a strong password or code associated with the parent's account.

Parents can also set an allowance that lets their children buy games or spend money on in-game transactions without giving them unlimited access to the family credit card. Furthermore, they can choose to restrict access to websites through the console, and decide how children can interact with friends or strangers online.

Xbox One also offers a "screen time" feature that can let parents determine when and for how long the console can be played.

Managing where they are surfing

The Internet is a powerful learning tool. It provides a world of information that is instantly available 24/7. However, the wide-ranging and anonymous nature of the Internet brings with it risks—from explicit or inappropriate content to predators lurking in chat rooms and using instant messaging services. Due to the Web’s potential dangers, many service providers offer free tools and software to help restrict certain types of content and features to keep young Web users safe.

Internet service providers (ISPs)

Web providers like Verizon, AT&T, and Comcast offer such free parental control features as the ability to:

  • Get a Web activity report that shows you all the Web sites your children visit or attempt to visit. You can check out the sites your kids have visited and block specific sites or types of sites you don’t want them going back to.

  • Create unique profiles for different family members with individualized online usage limits. This can be useful if you have children of different ages. One master account can be used to manage the settings of several “subordinate” account users.

  • Block access to certain Web tools such as instant messaging, gaming, chat rooms, and message boards, allowing parents to keep better track of what their children are saying and to whom.

  • Remotely manage your account with the ability to change parental control settings from any computer with Web access, whether in or outside the home.

  • View your child’s online activities as they happen with real-time Web tracking features

  • Allow young Web users to request permission to visit unauthorized Web sites for an adult to approve.

  • Receive a tamper controls alert if someone other than you tries to change the control settings.

  • Set up a timer that limits the amount of time users can spend online.

  • View search monitoring results that track the words and phrases your children search for online to help learn about what they are interested in. This way you can find out if they are trying to seek out blocked or inappropriate content.

To get more detailed information about exactly what controls are available to you, and what the system requirements are, the best bet is to contact your service provider directly. To lean more about the different Internet provider options, visit the Safe Families site here.

Parental Controls Internet Browsers and Search Engines

While Internet service providers offer a variety of great parental control options, you can also set up similar controls on the Web browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome, etc.) level. Most browsers let you restrict access to certain sites or pre-approve a list of sites your child has the ability to access. For example:

Safari users can create child user accounts that let you choose between three levels of Internet access:

  • give your children unrestricted access to all sites
  • a setting that only blocks access to certain restricted sites
  • an option that only lets children access sites you that you have pre-selected. Email and chat features can be set up so that young users can only chat and email with contacts you know and trust. Weekday and weekend computer time limits can be put in place as well.

Firefox and Chrome have no built-in parental control features. But, if your computer uses one of these browsers, you can download extensions such as ProCon (which blocks accidental visits to adult sites), LeechBlock (which sets up time limits for different users), and FoxFilter (which blocks content based on user-defined criteria). To learn more about different extension options, click here.

Search engines like Google and Bing have “safe search” settings that screens for sites that contain explicit sexual content and deletes them from your search results. This can be a great option since kids often stumble upon inappropriate content by accident when searching seemingly innocent terms.

This is not an exhaustive list of the available browser and search options, but is intended to give you an idea of the types of useful features that are available. At the very least, almost all browsers will give you the option of blocking access to restricted sites, whether it’s a feature that’s available out of the box, or if it’s an extension you have to download.

Which Is The Best Battery Life Smartphone?

Apple said at the launch of the iPhone 7 that the smartphone would have better battery life. But that doesn’t mean it can top Android competitors, according to new data.

The firm's testing sought to determine exactly how long each phone's battery would last while making voice calls and while browsing the web, both using 3G.

If we compared the iPhone 7’s battery life, when making calls and browsing the web, to those of three top Android competitors: the Samsung Galaxy S7, HTC 10 and LG G5, and the results were staggering.

Image: Smartphone battery life: The results. source via Which?

The iPhone 7 only managed 712 minutes (nearly 12 hours) with a single charge. On the other hand, the rival Samsung Galaxy S7 lasted twice as long.

The HTC 10 lasted an incredible 1,859 minutes (that’s almost 31 hours)!

As for Internet surfing, the iPhone 7 still came in last against its rivals although the differences weren't that major.

The differences seen when web-browsing using mobile data weren’t dramatic. The HTC 10 performed best, managing 790 minutes of continuous use. The iPhone 7 was worst, at 615 minutes, but not hugely lower than LG’s G5 which managed 640 minutes and Samsung’s Galaxy S7 at 677 minutes.

Why does the iPhone 7 battery fare so poorly?

So just why does the iPhone 7 have such a poor battery life? It may sound obvious, but the majority of the fault lies in its comparatively tiny cell. Smartphone batteries are measured in milliampere hours (mAh). The iPhone 7 has a 1,960mAh battery, whilst the HTC 10 has a 3,000mAh battery: it should hardly be surprising that one battery nearly half the size of another offers roughly half as much charge.
