Amazing Italian Style

An enthralling of Italy (Photo credit: goingabroad.org)
Italy dips down out of Europe and into the Mediterranean like a women's leg firmly planted in a sleek stiletto, so it's hardly surprising that Italians are known for their impeccable style and fashionable dress sense. They're also known for once having an empire that stretched across the globe, and for having the most spectacular  frescos, sculptures and Renaissance paintings in all of Europe.

The Italy of today is littered with the relics of more than 3,000 years of history, and an atmosphere that ranges from the Armani-wearing-scooter-driving-espresso-drinking buzz of its cities to the quiet, pastoral existence of its hillside olive farms and seaside fishing villages.

From the depths of the canals in Venice, which floats on a series of islands in an Adriatic lagoon, and the bleached sands of San Remo on the Riviera, to the rocky crags of the Alps, Dolomites and Apennines, Italy has everything from beach holidays to luxury mountain ski resorts.

Italy's cities reveal awe-inspiring architecture from the curved arches of the Ponte Vecchio in Florence to the crumbling magnificence of the Colosseum in Rome. Home of da Vinci, Michelangelo, Carvaggio and Botticelli, its artworks are a visual delight to all visitors.

Nestled into the outskirts of Rome is the independent Vatican City, the seat of the Pope and home to the famous St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel. The influence of the Holy Catholic Church on the people of Italy is still evident today in a series of holy festivals, carnivals, and parades involving young and old alike in almost every city, town and village.

Here are some ways we are enamored by Italian style:

Style Peg
Old-world charm, a chic vibe, and style inspiration provided by the locals are a costume designer’s dream for stylized movies like the Audrey Hepburn classic Roman Holiday (always gives us the sudden urge to don a scarf and hop on a Vespa), or the gorgeous psychological thriller The Talented Mr. Ripley (the ultimate peg for summer holiday dressing!).

Cinematic Setting
From fashion-centric Milan and the historic Vatican, to the idyllic Italian countryside, romantic gondola rides through Venice, and sleepy, sun-kissed islands, Italy has long been a popular destination for honeymooning couples, as well as reel-life adventure and romance (Il Postino, A Room with a View, Letters to Juliet, the Robert Downey oldie-but-goodie Only You, and the exquisite Life is Beautiful, to name a few). Frances Mayes’ bestselling novel-turned-movie Under The Tuscan Sun, where her heroine sets about the life-changing task of restoring an abandoned villa in the Tuscan countryside, perfectly captures our lust for the Italian way of life.

Bella Donna
There’s just something captivating about Italian women. From fresh-faced yet super hot Elisabetta Canalis (George Clooney’s former flame!) and pouty-lipped model Bianca Balti, to the patrician elegance of style icon Marella Agnelli, and the undeniable sex appeal of screen sirens Sophia Loren and Monica Belluci, Italian women are infinitely intriguing, seductive, sophisticated, and unapologetically feminine.

Art & Culture
Wonder why tourists flock to Italy year after year? This bucket-list worthy republic holds the distinction of having more UNESCO World Heritage Sites than any country in the world, and every student of art or culture enthusiast undoubtedly gets a thrill at being in the hub of Italian Renaissance masters. Imagine finally laying eyes on the famed ceiling of the Sistine Chapel? Priceless. (Or, in modern-speak: Instagram-worthy.)

Sweet Spot
Even if we can’t get book a plane ticket to Italy anytime soon, we love indulging in all the Italian pleasures we can get our hands on (handcrafted Italian leather! Sportscars! Perfume! Olive oil! Nutella!). Topping our list is Italian cuisine—from a simple caprese salad, to the popular pasta and pizza, to special treats like Sicilian marzipan and the zesty liqueur limoncello—our idea of an Italian feast is fresh, hearty, and family-size, truly a celebration of life, much like our own festive Pinoy nature.
